- Ok, lets plan a lightwave users meet, or something like that. I think
- it would be very benificial to get together with some other lightwave game
- creators and swap ideas about how we've delt with things. I know I've
- written about 20 plugins now, to deal with our issues, and I'm sure a lot
- of people out there have done the same. I'm also sure others will come
- across the same bariers we did, and others have probrobly already solved
- ones we have yet to face - so I think some discussion could be a good
- thing for everyone. Not to mention meeting some of the people on this list
- would be interesting..

- I would imagine an SGI owner with a C compiler (most Unix OSs have that) can

- Imagine also has a similar system for object movement. What I described to you earlier
- was movement along a path. You can also move the object using key frames the way you
- described for LW with the exeption that it does not automaticallly create a path that can
- be edited. The one bitch I have in imagine is the method Imagine uses to smooth the
- motion over several key frames sometimes is a bit unpredictable. Other than That I don't
- see too much difference here.
-
- I still hope to by LW some time but I will have to save for awhile. House needs new
- windows first and other stuff like that. I am also waiting to see If either Newtek os
- Impulse decides to support the PPC Amigas that are coming.

- Hello all! I want to do some basic non-linear editing work with my PAR
- and Lightwave. I'm running into several problems, however. With the PAR
- import/export set to translate ON with IFF file type, my 3.5 version of
- Lightwave standalone has trouble reading the sequence of images from the
- PAR drive. I keep getting an error message saying that Lightwave
- can't decode scanline 13. I could export all my frames to my hard
- drive, but that would be extremely time consuming and taxing on my
- system. Has anyone experienced similar difficulties?
-
- Second, about a year ago a thread came up about aspect ratios with
- Lightwave. I want to be able to use Lightwave as a DVE processor. With
- the source B video as my background image and my source A video mapped
- onto a rectangle that can flip, spin, fly, etc. off the screen. Does
- anyone remember the outcome of that thread? What is the proper aspect
- ratio needed for both the rectangle and the output of Lightwave? If
- anyone can help here, please email me at the addres below.
-
- Thanks in advance,
-

- Here's a simple suggestion. All I want to do is select multiple
- objects, lights, ect. For instance, when you want to parent 15 different
- objects to one null you have to do each one individually. Why not just
- SHIFT+Click? What about when you want to move 20 objects to the same Y
- location? You have to do them all individually or fool with the motion
- graphs or load motion files. Why not just SHIFT+Click all 20 objects and
- keyframe the Y position? Seems simple enough, in fact I'd be surprized if
- it isn't implemented in the next release (better be..)

- No. A meter doesn't "have" length. Light doesn't "have" photons.
- Money doesn't "have" value. To put it another way, *what is* money?

- Don't be confused by the fact that value varies over time and between

-
- Yes, but as strange as it may seem, the special effects in older
- movies seemed "real" to people when they came out, yet by modern
- standards they don't hold up. "Reality" is a state of mind :)
-
- But it doesn't mean realistic. The level of ambient light on
- starships on TV, the motion paths they take, etc., isn't consistent with
- what we know of reality (at least, not all the time). And I still
- believe that the look of models in Star Wars has pretty much set the
- standard for how spaceships should look, and anything appearing
- differently doesn't match this "real look" we've become used to.
-
- Thus, cool looking spacecraft which don't look like this aren't
- accepted as "real looking".
-
- >I've never seen the U.S.S. Voyager fly over my house -- but I believe

-
- It looks nice, yes, but isn't the lighting amazing for an object in
- deep space? Wow, somehow that warp field generates indirect ambient
- glows all around the ship's hull ;)
-
- >If it were a purple Adidas shoebox tooling through space, crawling with
- >an inch-thick matte line, I probably wouldn't think so. <g>
-
- I watched Spaceballs the other day, and the Centennial Eagle looked
- quite "real", just like a Winnebago with wings and hyperjets flying in
- space. Nice "dirt" on the hull as well. <g>.
-
- With regard to B5, which generates this "it doesn't look like models"
- problem, I'll have to watch my tapes again to see. But unless a given
- ship looks glaringly out of place with respect to its background,
- lighting, etc., I don't see how you can claim that it isn't realistic
- within the context of the SF technologies.
-
- One element to consider: Metallic hulls, bolts, and related grid
- structures may be only a passing phase. The use of colorful plastic
- materials, if stronger than metals, has already been considered (look at
- modern automobiles!), and powered materials (hulls which are made partly
- of energy) surely won't look like metal objects. And "weathering" in
- space isn't something that has to happen, nor does it have to be left in
- place.
-
- In B5, The Terran technology is supposed to be earth-like, and thus
- somewhat familiar. Alien technology, especially things like the
- Vorlons, Mbari, and Shadows, is very, very different.
-
- And does anyone think that B5's space scenes don't look cool?
-
- {Oops, bad question. I don't want flames, but wouldn't mind seeing
- intelligent discussion regarding why they aren't.)

- Are Newtek aware that the entire AVI mechanism under Windows is

-
- Indeed. Space battles will be mostly invisible: reality would be boring.
-
- Arthur C. Clarke USED this shortcoming in a book whose name escapes me:
- A mysterious installation toasted some ships with what appeared to be death beams.
- Then it dawns on the protagonist that he wouldn't SEE beams in space: what it
- was was molten rock from the center of the Moon, and the installation was a mining
- experiment, altered for defense. (And plot purposes.....)

- Yup yup yup. Or if they give us a good "reason", like the knife fighting
- in "Dune".

- Try making your sphere with Segments=(sides/2)+1 (use the [numeric]
- panel to access these settings). This seems to work well for the stock
- procedural textures and those applied with a spherical map method. May
- not eliminate it, but it definitely improves it...

-
- Sorry about my original post. Didn't mean to be so trite.
-
- Let me first expand on Meshpaint. [Disclaimer: I've only used the freely
- distributable version available from NewTek's FTP site]. The newest demo
- version works as advertised; that is, it allows you to paint on your model,
- save the images, and map them in LW the same way you choose to map them while
- making them in Meshpaint. The software handles image maps as they will appear
- in LW. I hasten to add that it is an excellent complement to LW, especially
- if you do a lot of "decalling" or mapping that doesn't easily lend itself
- to planar, cylindrical, spherical or cubic mapping. The newest version
- [from NewTek's FTP site] is also an improvement over the original demo version
- which only allowed painting on one polygon at a time.
-
- I should clarify this as well: there are actually two Amazon Paints. One is
- a 2D special FX, image processing-type program -- sort of a Photoshop on
- quaaludes [!?] -- called Amazon Paint. Amazon 3D Paint allows painting directly
- onto the surface of 3D models in real-time and is functionally equivalent to
- Meshpaint.
-
- A direct comparison isn't really fair. Indeed, the Amazon Paints *only* run on
- SGI [AFAIK] and the price is, well, steep. I believe Amazon Paint [2D] retails
- for about $3500 and Amazon 3D Paint is around $2000. I'm not sure what the price
- is for Meshpaint. [Brent?] Suffice to say, it isn't that much.
-
- Amazon 3D Paint's most compelling features may be a by-product of the SGI
- platform as much as anything else. *Fast* real-time zooming, rotation, & panning.
- Slickly integrated with Renderman. Multiple layers of texture, bump, opacity
- maps, etc.
-
- Here in the real world [at least for my *own* PC, anyway] I'm seriously
- considering the commercial version of MP. What remains to be seen, however, is
- how well integrated MP will be with LW's next release with regard to UV mapping
- and other texturing capabilities. As a stand alone program for Windows95/NT,
- it may not have the same level of integration that the IPAS 3DS implementation
- does.
-
- Hope this helps.
-
- [My apologies to BM]

- Under Win3.x this should be pretty easy to do with Visual Basic. I wrote a
- simple slide show program a few years ago and found that it was a simple
- process to convert it into a screen saver. I'm no programmer, but I am sure I
- could do it if I had a day or so of free time. As I recall, the basic idea
- was to make some simple modifications and to rename the file to a .scr
- extension. Then just load it up as the screen saver under the Control Panel.
- There is no reason it has to display images as I recall. People that really
- know how to program could do it more elegantly, but I bet this would work.
- This approach lets Windows monitor the activity or lack therof. Less work for
- the non-programmer.

- Actually, you can use ScreamerNet on a non-networked machine with no control
- program. All you have to do is copy a couple of simple ASCII text files

- Let me point out that while many current LightWave users may not like

-
- Now, let me follow that by saying the ad has run its course. It did

- release on the horizon (thats all Im saying!) its time to refocus
- marketing efforts not only on new users but also on the existing

-
- OK, Ill be quiet now.

- Hi All,
-
- As a fairly inexperienced 3D animator, I'm trying to model a golf ball.
- However, simply bump mapping a series of dimples (actually one dimple,
- multiple copies) wrapped around a sphere does not create a realistic looking
- golf ball...although it may do in a pinch. The problem is that the spacing,
- size, and shape of the dimples changes due to the wrap while all these
- elements are consistent on a real golf ball. How does one model a truly
- realistic looking golf ball? If anybody could give me some pointers on how
- to do this (or find the necessary files to do so) it would be greatly
- appreciated. For the recorde, I am using Alias Animator 6.0 (not Power
- Animator). Thank-you in advance.

- Try this:
-
- Make the plane as minimum 2 objects (body & prop). In lightwave make
- the body as the parent object of the propeller (Button is on the
- bottom, center of the screen). Create two key-frames with about 24 or
- 30 frames (1 second in real time) between for the propeller. Go in the
- motion graph menu, check your rotation axis and make a rotation for
- about 1080 degrees. Klick in the same menu the end behaviour button
- und fix it on repeat. That's it.
- You must try it by yourself how many frames you will use between the
- keyframes, and how often the prop will spin in this time. Make sure
- that you work with multiply of complete rotations (360 degrees).

- One way would be to make a map of the entire golfball and correct
- to the north and south pole for the distortion.
- This can be done by streching the map in dpaint by wrap-filling
- an hour-glass shape.
-
- But I'm sure a procedural texture exists for this (check aminet)

- Hello,
-
- I am now doing my final year project. The area is to study back
- lighting effect by using difference light-guide design.
-
- I want to use rendering software to solve the light refraction and
- rendering problem. However, I have no experience on any rendering
- software. Can anyone give me suggestion about which software can
- handle Light Refraction problem, which must truly base on Physics
- equations, and help me to do a simple testing?
-
- About the above testing, what I want to do is to create a simple 3D
- solid model, says a "L" shape extrusion model. Then apply a light
- source on one end and see how will be the light effect on the other
- end of the model. So, if anyone can help me do the testing, then I
- can send you the "L" shape solid model file (either AutoCAD format or
- IGES format). I hope the result can be saved as a TIFF, or BMP, etc.
- format.
-
- Any comment will be appreciated.
-
- Thanks in advance for your help.
-
- Best Regards, Andy.

- Let me point out that while many current LightWave users may not like
- the "we've got what it takes" ad, it has generated more calls to
- customer service than any ad we have run in the past. I know its hard
- for LightWave users to see an ad that doesnt show off the output, or
- tout the feature list, but this ad cut through the noise. It was
- different, it had a good message, and it prompted people to call. And
- yes sales went up.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -
-
- Let me do a 'fact check' here....
-
- 1) The 'We've got' generated more LW calls, perhaps - it was really only
- the third ad ever for LW, and it followed a worse ad...it did surely not
- generate more calls in general - there were may more 'Revolution' calls,
- certainly
-
- 2) It was different than good - It was poorly written...the message was
- 'low price', essentially, not the one I'd put forward....
-
- 3) Sales can't 'go down', unless people return product. Sales haven't met
- expectations, however - they can't be considered 'good' by too many
- standards.
-
- 4) It's hard to test these things without a control group.
-
- 'Nothing was wrong, but we're changing gears" - please please please, stop
- doing this. The Emporer has no clothes, and most people are smart enough
- to know - even if you don't want to admit it....stop trying to put a
- postive spin on everything...
-

- Just a note to let all Lightwavers know about a new website to check
- out. It's the site for Webscape Design in Oshawa, Canada. We primarily
- are a page design and graphics house (using LW of course!), but we
- also market a package of macros called WaveTools. These macros are not
- freeware but are affordably priced. They will really be of interest to
- AMIGA users only that are using LW 3.1 or 3.5. Check out the details

- NT 4.0 is now in Beta Test. The new version of NT4 has a full
- implementation of the 95 shell and seems generally quicker and more
- responsive then 3.51. It also has a slightly smaller memory footprint
- which is good news for us Lightwavers.
-
- We benchmarked it against 95 in running a render on a 32MB P6-200.
- NT4 - did the render in 3mins 58 and under 95 the identical scene took
- 6.05
-
- As far as I can tell this is the only way to go!

-
- True enough. I do the same thing all the time. I guess by "move" I was referring
- to translation in X,Y,Z space, not rotation.
-
- Come to think of it, I've broken my own rule about not moving ("translating")
- the camera as well, if only to a limited extent. On a recent project I needed
- the camera to wind backwards through a serpentine path while smoothly tracking
- up and down. I parented the camera to a null that acted like a dolly, moving
- only in X and Z. Then I moved the camera itself strictly on the Y-axis. The
- result was extremely smooth, like having one guy pushing the dolly, another
- operating the crane and a third tilting the camera. Doing all of that by
- keyframing just the camera, with no nulls, would have been ugly and taken
- quite a bit longer.

- You can run ScreamerNet and LightWave at the same time on one machine, then
- cue up to sixteen scenes.
-
- If you're using an Amiga, the April issue of VTU has a blurb (p.13) for a
- product called WaveNet, which cues scenes and handles distributed rendering.
- Price is $295, from D'Visions in Ontario. Their number is 519-455-7585.

- "second best". That comment wasn't directed at Foundation, but at a certain

- At our software company we write 3d file format translators. We are
- thinking about writing some for the LWB format but we are not sure if
- you're needs are already being met by existing offerings (such as the
- plug-ins that already ship with Lightwave or by Syndesis' Interchange
- and other shareware products).
-
- So, would you please tell us here or via email the answers to the
- following questions, in your opinion for your work as a professional:
-
- 1) Do you have need of (meaning would you be interested in buying if it
- were available) a standalone translator that converts 3ds format files
- INCLUDING TEXTURE MAPPINGS and MATERIALS into LWB format ?
-
- (Explanation of logic behind question: the currently available
- translators are geometry only. We could do texture maps but we aren't
- sure professionals would want that feature. The possibility is that
- professionals want to apply their own new texture maps anyway so you
- wouldn't be interested in translating models from other formats with the
- textures included since you are going to replace them anyway).
-
- 2) Besides 3dStudio, are there other file formats you would be willing
- to pay for translators into Lightwave?
-
- 3) What price would you expect to pay for such translators?
-
- 4) Would you expect to buy them individually or as a set?
-
- Thank you for your time and input,

- As far as poly's go your object will be a poly set as well, so at this
- point it depends on how much control you need. I have Alias and LW so
- but I would not use LW for such a task myself. The problem is that you
- have to bend a poly object as opposed to splines so funny things can
- and do happen with poly's. If you have Power Animator with the
- advanced anim option then you have access to it's IK functions which
- are much superior to LW's and you also have clusters. The down side to
- Alias though is that it's not very intuitive and will take some
- tweaking as well as LW. If you don't know Alias IK at all then you had
- better stick to LW because you won't have time to learn it. Either way
- you will have some subdividing to do in certain areas any way to get
- ti to render properly.

- layout tool in LW. Look at how we have to fake volumetric light/shadows--
- the volumetric effects cast shadows themselves(!).

- Hi :)
-
- I would need to know if LightWave is able to output not only the color of
- each pixel, but also its _distance_ from the camera (for Z-buffering).
-
- This function is called "Deep-Map", if I am not wrong.
-
- If it exists (as expansion?), I would need to know the name, its cost, and if
- there's a demo available somewhere (Amiga only).
-
-
- Please, send replyes via email at bizzetti@mbox.vol.it because I cannot read

- Emmanuel:
-
- The Forge package is avalible only for the amiga. not
- for the PC. It is basicly a front end for a set of textures
- called Essence, and developed by Steve Worleywho is ***Rummor
- Warning*** now working for NewTek. The textures were origanly
- developed for use with Imagne. That's why you need the front
- end, Forge.
-
- The Pros: It is a really nice piece of work. It alows you to
- create fully animated textures with extream controle over many
- attributes.
-
- The Cons: ***Rummor Warning***If you can wait the Essence
- package should be directly avalible for the LW as a plug-in
- very soon (we'll know more after NAB).
-
- If you are using the PC and have access to Photoshop I highly
- recomend KPT3.0 it has some very nice texture development tools
- although not as 3D oriented as Forge.

- I've recently switched lightwave platforms from Amiga to the PC. I
- know that on both platforms, the only way to get full screen, 3o fps
- animations is through hardware solutions.(ie par cards, or single

- Solid, Shaded, Modeler previews without OpenGL or Powerview.
- Best of all it's free.
-
- First of all save your model using the VRML saver plugin.
- Then you need a VRML web browser.
- You don't need to have an Internet connection to use this just the
- browser. I am using Netscape's Live3D VRML browser.
- After saving your model out as VRML it will have a .wrl extension
- you can load this into your VRML Browser and spin it, fly it, and
- rotate it in real time.
-
- It's free, it's real time, and it's much better than the Amiga version
- of powerview, haven't seen the PC version yet.

- Much as I loved my Amigas, the answer has to be SELL!
-
- Any future Amiga that has any grunt is unlikely to be useful with the other
- software you may have at the moment. ie: If the Amiga comes back it will be in
- a radically different from to your 4000 and you will need to buy new software
- (OK maybe not entirely true - but do you want to still be running 5 year-old
- software on a RISC based Amiga - I think not!)
-
- You want render speed and the latest upgrades - they will happen on the PC -
- it's a bitch isn't it.
-
- My Warp engine 4000/040/40 was running at 50 MIPS, I now have two Pentiums
- each running at 250 MIPS. I traded my Amiga on one of the Pentiums as a direct
- swap - for a five fold rendering speed increase.
-
- OK - rendering speed ain't everything, but it's a fairly significant factor.
-
- No - the PC's don't multi-task like the Amiga. Not even close. I was doing a
- Syquest to HDD copy of about 250 Meg of data this morning and the whole box
- slowed down - just from a file-copy! (Please - no Mac arguments here!)
-
- Basically, you'll regret losing the ease of the Amiga's OS but you'll gain
- heaps in speed, flexibility of add-ons and the wide range of good software
- that is available for MicroSloth.
-
- PS If you can afford NT- bypass 95
-
- Cheers

- For anyone who was thinking of checking this out, save yourself the

- There was rotating section on the 2001 ship, with the rest of it in zero gravity
- (or supposedly -- see below). But I think J. Eric was asking about the gravity in
- Silent Running. Where did THAT come from? That ship had no rotating sections
- whatsoever.
-
- Now for some continuity problems: Early in 2001, remember the sequence with the
- moon shuttle, when they're flying out to take a look at the Artifact? They were
- eating sandwiches, moving around and POURING COFFEE as if there was Earth gravity
- onboard. And that shuttle definitely wasn't of the rotating hull variety. A bit of
- a contrast from all that space ballet stuff just a couple scenes earlier, with food
- in pouches and velcro slippers, etc.
-
- On the ship that goes to Jupiter, the spinning section (not visible from outside)
- is supposed to be the only area with gravity, right? You can tell that it's a
- narrow disc in the middle of the living sphere. Good science so far. But what about
- the infamous pod bay? It couldn't possibly be spinning, yet as I recall both it and
- the cockpit also have gravity. Huh?

- I think the trouble comes from different interpretations of the
